If you’re one of our afternoon/night Phoenix Fitness members there is no doubt you have seen Michelle Stanfield. You will recognize her because she probably was the first one to say hi to you as a new member and help you figure out weight selection in BODYPUMP. You’ll also recognize her as consistently being one of the hardest working members in class. Michelle hasn’t always been on a path to wellness, read on to learn what motivated her to start and why she keeps coming back.
PF: What made you decide to start coming to Phoenix Fitness?
MS: I started coming to Phoenix Fitness because of the awesome instructors and members in this community. There is no other Les Mills facility that comes close to inspiring me personally to strive for the health and well being I desire. I believe in the transformation team’s ability to push me and other members to our limits and beyond to achieve our individual goals.
PF: How often do you come to Phoenix Fitness?
MS: I attend Phoenix Fitness between 5 and 6 times a week and usually take 2 classes each day. (As long as pesky work doesn’t interfere!)
PF: Which classes do you take and do you have a favorite?
MS: I take all the Les Mills classes offered (I’m a Les Mills addict) it’s hard to fit them all in every week, I need more hours in the day to workout!! I mainly take BODYCOMBAT, BODYPUMP, BODYFLOW, and GRIT. My absolute favorite is BODYCOMBAT! I have loved it since the first time I took the class!! I feel empowered and so strong both during and after that class. I also have a new love/hate relationship with GRIT. It is amazing the changes it makes to both your body and how much harder you can push yourself in the other Les Mills classes.
PF: What do you love about Phoenix Fitness?
MS: I love the positive energy I feel whether I’m in a class, at the front desk signing in or talking to other members in the locker room. Phoenix Fitness is one of my happy places, I love being with everyone in our community fighting together for, as Marta always says, wellness.
PF: What advice do you have for new Phoenix Fitness members or people curious about what we offer?
MS: My advice for new members is to not be afraid or intimidated. This is truly a safe place. The transformation team members will do everything in their power to help you in class. The members are also more than happy to help. I love the opportunity to give back the help I received when I first started. Ask questions before or after class, the instructors will always take the time to help you get the most out of your workout.
PF: Outside of Phoenix Fitness-what are your favorite hobbies?
MS: When I’m not working or at Phoenix Fitness I like to spend time with family and friends. Whether it’s going out for lunch and doing some shopping with my mom, to playing with my best friend’s kids or just relaxing together and talking. I feel, sometimes it is important to relax and enjoy the people around you and just be.
PF: Share one thing people at Phoenix Fitness might not know about you.
MS: About 10 years ago before I made the best decision to exercise and to take better care of myself I was almost 300lbs. I was always tired with no energy and sick a lot of the time. Through my journey for wellness I have fought through some health issues and can honestly say I am much happier and healthier then I have been in years. My journey continues and I am glad to have Phoenix Fitness as a safe place I can come to with a great community that both supports and challenges me.
