When Yasi Back heard Phoenix Fitness was opening she immediately sent flowers and a really sweet card. This speaks to both how thoughtful she is and how ready for a challenge she was too! To be in a class with Yasi is to witness mindfulness in action mixed with humor and determination. In short-she is a ball of hard work and fun!
PF: What made you decide to start coming to Phoenix Fitness?
YB: I had been shopping for a gym in the Kalamazoo area for quite some time. I checked out all of the well-known gyms in the area and let’s just say I was not wowed. I couldn’t imagine paying to be a member at a place that didn’t feel right for me. I wanted a gym where I could get in, get out, and get on with my day. And nothing fit the bill—until Phoenix Fitness opened in January, that is. I never thought I’d feel actual LOVE for a gym. You’re talking to a person whose lifestyle was pretty sedentary. But, it’s true, I now have a very committed and loving relationship with Phoenix Fitness. We’re celebrating our 4 month anniversary this month. ;)
PF: How often do you come to Phoenix Fitness?
YB: I usually go 3-4 times per week. I try to not go too many days in between so that I don’t get off track.
PF: Which classes do you take and do you have a favorite?
YB: I take BODYPUMP, BODYFLOW, and GRIT. I’ve also tried Bodycombat and CXWorx. I love all of the classes but my favorite class is BODYPUMP. I love how strong it makes me feel and it’s really cool seeing how much stronger I’ve gotten over time. If you would have told me a few months ago that I would be lifting the weights that I do now I would have called you crazy. And the change that I’ve seen in my body in such a short amount of time is astounding!
BODYFLOW is my next favorite class. I have a hard time getting “zen” when I only have a limited amount of time dedicated to physical activity. But, BODYFLOW is perfect for me because not only does it relax me and stretch me out from my head to my toes; the continuous movements, great instructors, and awesome music keep me challenged and engaged. It is the perfect complement to a class like BODYPUMP.
And of course… I have a love/hate relationship with GRIT. I hate that it’s so hard, but I love that I feel like a beast when I leave class. ☺
PF: What do you love about Phoenix Fitness?
YB: Everything. Everything about Phoenix Fitness is top notch. It is the only gym that I’ve ever been a member of that I have stayed committed to over time. The instructors are incredible and the classes are so fun. And the most important thing for me is that the classes WORK. I see the changes in my body and my mind. The instructors, staff, members are fantastic and the environment of Phoenix Fitness is so uplifting. I always leave the classes happy, regardless of how I felt when I came in (or how much convincing it took to get myself there). And knowing that I’m part of such a positive community is awesome.
PF: What advice do you have for new Phoenix Fitness members or people curious about what we offer?
YB: Take your time and push yourself to your own challenging place. No one is judging you. We were all new once, too! Oh, and try as many classes as you can. Something that you would have never tried before may turn out to be your favorite class. (This happened to me with BODYPUMP and BODYFLOW.)
PF: Outside of Phoenix Fitness-what are your favorite hobbies?
YB: I love spending time with my husband, our dog, and our family and friends. If I can do all of those things together, it’s even better! I’m also learning how to cook vegetarian and vegan foods so that we get a little more variety (and a lot more greens) in our diets. It’s been quite a fun and delicious adventure!
PF: Share one thing people at Phoenix Fitness might not know about you.
YB: I have a gold-black belt in Mixed Martial Arts. It’s a combination of traditional martial arts with contemporary principles and modern combative techniques. My formative years were spent sparring, disarming (fake) knives, and generally kicking bootay.
