Angelina (aka Lina) Kelly is one of our newer team members at Phoenix Fitness but right from the start she impressed members with her instruction and passion. Lina lives the Phoenix Fitness philosophy of whole body wellness both at Phoenix Fitness and outside our doors. Lina teaches BODYFLOW Thursdays at 7:30pm.
PF: How did you get started in Fitness?
AK: I, like many of the other transformation team, was very active and involved with many sports as a kid. In my early 20s, a friend of mine told me that I should start teaching this awesome new class coming to the gym called BODYCOMBAT. I watched the DVD, and loved it, so I got trained and certified. This month actually marks my 10th anniversary as a BODYCOMBAT and Les Mills instructor!
PF: How did you choose Phoenix Fitness?
AK: I have taught at many gyms in my career, but Phoenix Fitness is the best. I can become a better instructor here. At Phoenix Fitness, we have a high standard of teaching excellence and bringing nothing but our best in each and every class. I don't want to just be good at what I do, I want to be great. Phoenix Fitness allows me to grow and be better than what I am. Plus, the community of people is positive, welcoming, and inspiring. I just love it here!
PF: You are certified in BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, BODYFLOW AND CXWORX, do you have a favorite to teach?
AK: BODYCOMBAT, hands down!!! I studied martial arts for many years, which is why my friend recommended that I start teaching it. I love the energy, the music and the feel that I experience every time I walk into a BODYCOMBAT class. Not to mention that when I get on that stage, I can be that warrior that I always wanted to be.
PF: What do you love about teaching?
AK: There is something about being up on that stage that is just exciting. Knowing that people are coming to me to get fitter and stronger is so motivating. It's just an indescribable feeling of love and passion for the people I lead and the programs that I teach. I also love all the people that I have met. Not just here in the midwest, but all over the world. Meeting so many fitness enthusiasts and sharing that same crazy love for fitness is great!
PF: What are a few of your go to healthy snacks?
AK: I love egg white omelet muffins. I make these in bulk, so I can easily eat them on the go. Whatever you like in an omelet (veggies, meat, seasonings) mix it all together and portion out in a muffin tin then pour liquid egg whites on top. Bake for about 25 minutes on 350 and there you go. It’s a healthy snack that gives you the protein and carbs you need for a great breakfast meal or snack.
I make my own granola cereal and granola bars. The ones I just made last week have been great. They were chia, honey lemon bars - oh so delicious!

PF: Do you work outside teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
AK: Yes, I help run my family-owned business, Critchlow Alligator Sanctuary in Athens, MI. We run a reptile and amphibian rescue business. We have about 100 alligators, snakes, turtles, tortoises, lizards and so much more. It's basically our own zoo that is open to the public. It's a ton of fun. PF: What are your hobbies outside of teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
AK: I love my family. I have 2 daughters, Isabella age 5, and Vanessa age 3, and a wonderful husband, Kyle. We love to have "family fun adventure days" where we pick someplace we have never been, within a reasonable drive, and just have fun and try new things.
I love to travel and cook, but I do have another passion...
I love finding holistic/natural approaches for wellness. Using food as medicine is very important to me. I make a number of my own household supplies as well as my own health and beauty products. Our earth provides us the tools to better ourselves not just nutritionally, but physically, emotionally as well. Plus everyone loves to eat, so why not figure out natural remedies?
PF: What is one thing people at Phoenix Fitness might not know about you?
AK: Not only am I certified in the Les Mills programs, I am also a certified personal trainer and I am currently working on my Sports and Nutrition Coaching certification through Precision Nutrition. Living a healthy life is important to me, but also helping others to live a happier, healthier life is just as important. So, if you need help with any workout or nutrition aspect, please don't hesitate to ask.
