This Tuesday let us introduce you to Barb Welke! Barb is certified in Bodypump and Bodyattack. Barb has Bodypump classes Mondays at Noon and Wednesdays at 6:00am. She will also have a Bodyattack class when Phoenix Fitness launches Bodyattack in April! Anyone who has taken a class of Barb’s will tell you that her love for what she does and the people in her classes is true and genuine. We are lucky to have her at Phoenix Fitness!
PF: How did you get started in Fitness?
BW: I have always loved fitness but was a cardio junkie most of my life. I loved running and have done that since high school. When I was pregnant with my 3rd, I joined SWAT and fell in LOVE with Les Mills classes. The rest is history and now I feel like I am always trying to find new ways to challenge myself! A few years back I started Bodypump and weight training and saw a huge difference in my body with that added to my routine. I feel like strength training is a very important element in any training routine.
PF: You’re certified in Bodyattack and Bodypump, do you have a favorite to teach?
BW: Bodyattack and Bodypump are so different! My favorite all time class is Bodyattack because it pushes the participates to places they would never go on their own and I love to help people get to that level. Bodypump is also great because I love the coaching aspect and I love seeing members grow in their strength. I think they are both great classes for totally different reasons!
PF: What do you love about teaching?
BW: I love making a small difference in a person's day. Whether it is coaching a perfect lunge or how to get your tuck jump higher, I love helping people reach their fitness goals.
PF: How did you choose Phoenix Fitness?
BW: Phoenix Fitness is special and not like anywhere else in the area. It has a mix of experienced and newer instructors but everyone wants to grow to be the best they can be so that their members in their classes see results. At Phoenix we don't want to just check the box, we want to coach above and beyond so it is the best experience for everyone. My goal for every class is that everyone comes and enjoys a class and at the same time is pushed to a level they couldn't do on their own-Phoenix Fitness celebrates that in me as an instructor.
PF: What are a few of your go to healthy snacks?
BW: I love Acai bowls- my new fav! I also love raw almonds and fruit- my snack for the car usually. I like quinoa and fruit and I usually have an UMP shake daily. Justin's Almond butter is great on anything! I really, really love food so finding healthy food that tastes great is a hobby of mine!
PF: Do you work outside of teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
BW: I am a stay at home mom. My husband runs our family business Penn Station East Coast Subs. We have 3 locations in Kalamazoo and 2 in Grand Rapids. Best subs in the area!
PF: What are your hobbies outside of teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
BW: I love hanging with my husband, Ben, and enjoying my 3 kids (Braden and Brice 8 and 6 and Brinley who is 4). We love being outside and going for adventures. Family movie nights are fun after a long week and I love a date night with my hubby every once in awhile. We love hanging out with our friends and family.
PF: What is one thing members at Phoenix Fitness might not know about you?
BW: I am a born and raised Floridian! My hubby Ben and I met in college at USF in Tampa and he is from Portage. He loved living here so much that he wanted to move back. I agreed 8 years ago and I love living in Michigan! I do miss my Florida beaches but most of all my family down there!
