Christine Walker may be one of our newer RPM instructors but she has been a part of the Phoenix Fitness family from the beginning. For those of us who have been a part of her journey to wellness for a long time, we are not at all surprised to watch her evolution into a great instructor-she has proved so much to herself and to us all about how capable we all are of greatness. You can be inspired by Christine in RPM on Tuesdays at Noon or read on and stay for the pictures!
PF: How did you get started in Fitness?
CW: I joined an aerobics class (complete with leotard and tights) with my mom when I was 12 or 13 and fell in love with exercise. I played softball and was a cheerleader in high school, but I didn't stay consist with fitness until about 4 years ago, when I joined SWAT and began a journey to lose weight.
PF: How did you choose Phoenix Fitness?
CW: I love Les Mills classes and I love the people! There isn't anywhere else I'd rather teach or workout!
PF: What do you love about teaching?
CW: Ok, I know I said this already, but I love Les Mills! I love their philosophy and warrior spirit! I love, love RPM! I had the opportunity to train to become an RPM instructor, so I jumped at the chance, even though I was terrified and it took me far out of my comfort zone! I love being a part of it all! I truly believe change only occurs outside of our comfort zone! For me, personally, I have loved the growth that has happened since becoming an instructor. I hope to become a great instructor some day and help others fall in love with RPM, to get totally immersed in the beat of the music, and to push themselves farther than they thought they could go. That is what I love about being an instructor, the hope that I can facilitate the changing of someone's mind from "I can't" to "yes, I can!"
PF: What are a few of your go to healthy snacks?
CW: I love Cookies and Cream Quest Bars! Chia seed pudding is also an easy, yummy, and filling snack/light meal.
PF: Do you work outside teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
CW: Yes! I am so blessed to be able to work in many areas that I am passionate about. I am a Massage Therapist at Integrative Body Balance and I teach Anatomy and Physiology at the Institute for Massage Education at the Kalamazoo Center for the Healing Arts.
PF: What are your hobbies outside of teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
CW: I love running! I also love geneology/family history and digging in the dirt! I love having a vegetable garden and canning, when life isn't too busy. Most of all, I love being with my family and friends! I have amazing people in my life!
PF: What is one thing people at Phoenix Fitness might not know about you?
CW: I am a black belt in Karate! Just kidding! I have been married for 22 years and have 5 children and we, as a family, have moved 16 times! I loved the new adventure in each move! I have enjoyed places like Savannah, Georgia and Logan, Utah and several places in SW Michigan! Kalamazoo is home though and I am glad to be back and to be staying put! We are approaching 5 years now in the same place, which is our record!!
Thank you so much, Christine, for committing to your wellness so that our members feel better equipped to commit to their own wellness! And for those who haven’t seen her lately, if you can imagine, she’s actually lost even more weight than the “after” picture below! Congratulations Christine! So much to be proud of!
