To know Doris Miller is to love her. Her energy and enthusiasm for life, health and the participants in her class is positively contagious. PF: How did you get started in Fitness?
DM: I started in my mid-20's at clubs in the Kalamazoo area and was big into aerobics and step. I also used to run several miles a day but decided that I liked the group fitness classes better since I'm a very social person. It's been a part of my life for over 30yrs!
PF: How did you choose Phoenix Fitness?
DM: I went to a few other gyms in Kalamazoo while waiting to see what the future would hold for former SWAT folks; although nice places, there was something missing. I would follow Marta Franco anywhere!
PF: You’re certified in BODYVIVE AND BODYPUMP, do you have a favorite to teach?
DM: I love them both for different reasons; they both focus on strength and functional training; Pump uses weights, Vive uses the resistance tubes. Some type of resistance training is especially important to women as we mature to reduce loss in bone density and prevent osteoporosis. Vive also includes low impact cardio but you can challenge yourself by adding jumps where appropriate.
PF: What do you love about teaching?
DM: I love connecting with the members, watching them challenge themselves and pushing through the pain as a TEAM. It's just as tough for me as it is for them, and you've heard the old saying, 'misery loves company!' If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you..........
PF: What are a few of your go to healthy snacks?
DM: Fruit, it's easy and travels well. I pack my breakfast and lunch daily which includes several servings of fresh fruit, i.e., strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, banana, mango and more. I usually have yogurt packed as well for some protein.
PF: Do you work outside teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
DM: Yes, I am the Human Resource Director for a non-profit organization of 600 employees located 45 minutes of Kalamazoo. The company provides supported independent services to adults and children with disabilities both mental and physical; it's very rewarding.
PF: What are your hobbies outside of teaching at Phoenix Fitness?
DM: I enjoy yardwork and organizing things in my home (yes, I'm a little OCD!). Spending time with my family is when I am the happiest; summers are especially fun as we do a lot of activities together.
PF: What is one thing people at Phoenix Fitness might not know about you?
DM: I was born in Tacoma, WA on an army base; moved to Michigan when I was 7yrs. old, grew up in Lansing, and went to high school with Ervin (Magic) Johnson.
